FRONT PORCH REBUILD

Fixing a 80 year old porch…
Refurbish or Rebuild?
The patio was very old and in very rough shape when we moved in. The boards were rotted, railing danced around and steps were uneven. Initially I removed the most rotten boards just so no one would fall through. But I knew I would need to revisit the patio so that no one got seriously injured. My daughter fell through one of the rails that were rotten and hurt herself one day. That is when I decided I needed to rebuild the whole patio.
Some of the boards were so rotten that the slightest amount of force would make it fall apart. All of the rotten pieces needed to be ripped out and replaced.
The railing was kept up by a couple screws so I decided to chisel out some concrete and poured new concrete footings.
The 4 x 4 keeping the patio roof up was rotted and worthless at the base and had to be kept up using some shoring for support and than carefully replaced with a new piece.
I managed to salvage about 1/3 of the boards and press washed them. I used basic geometry to do all the carpentry. I repainted the front of the house first, the railing / trim second and the patio third.
I was pretty satisfied with the results and it was very budget friendly.
